A Workshop Built on Quiet Diligence
stemwind was founded on a simple conviction: that mechanical watches deserve care that matches the craft that made them.
Back to Homestemwind, Subang Jaya
stemwind began in Subang Jaya as a one-watchmaker workshop with a clear purpose: to service mechanical timepieces with the same precision and patience that went into making them. Over the years, the workshop has become a trusted address for watch owners across Selangor and the Klang Valley who want their pieces handled with care rather than expedience.
We work with a range of mechanical calibres — from everyday Swiss and Japanese automatics to complicated or historically significant movements. Each piece is approached on its own terms. We don't apply a single method to every watch; we read what the mechanism is telling us and respond accordingly.
Our approach to client communication is straightforward: we explain what we find, what we recommend, and why. We don't proceed with work beyond the agreed scope without a conversation first. The owner is part of the process, not a bystander to it.
The workshop name — stemwind — refers to the crown-and-stem mechanism at the heart of every manually-wound and hand-set watch. It's the point of human contact with the movement: small, deliberate, essential. That's the kind of work we do.
Our Mission
To service mechanical watches with the technical precision and personal attention they deserve — and to return each piece in better condition than it arrived.
Our Vision
A workshop where watch owners in Malaysia can bring their mechanical pieces — regardless of brand or age — and receive honest, skilled servicing without unnecessary intervention.
Our Values
Honesty, transparency, and restraint. We do what needs doing, explain it clearly, and never recommend work that doesn't serve the watch or its owner.
The People Behind the Work
A small team, focused on doing one thing well.
Rizal Azman
Head Watchmaker
Trained in watchmaking with over fifteen years working on mechanical movements. Rizal leads every technical decision in the workshop and handles all complex calibre work personally.
Siti Norashikin
Service Coordinator
Siti manages client communication, service documentation, and workshop scheduling. She is the first point of contact for most enquiries and ensures every owner stays informed throughout the process.
Kua Chee Wai
Movement Specialist
Chee Wai focuses on Japanese and German calibres, as well as case conservation. His background in material science informs how he approaches dial stabilisation and metal surface work.
How We Work
A set of consistent practices that guide every service, regardless of the watch or the work involved.
Pre-Service Assessment
Every watch is assessed before any work begins. The owner receives a written summary of findings and a clear scope of work for approval.
Calibrated Lubrication
We use only manufacturer-grade horological lubricants, applied at correct quantities to each part of the movement. Incorrect lubrication is a leading cause of premature wear.
Regulation and Timing
Movements are regulated to within acceptable COSC-equivalent tolerances where feasible, tested across multiple positions and power reserve states.
Water Resistance Testing
Where applicable, water resistance is verified after case reassembly using a dry pressure tester. Results are noted in the service record.
Parts Provenance
Any replacement parts — mainsprings, gaskets, stem and crown components — are sourced from reputable suppliers. Non-original substitutions are always disclosed.
Secure Storage
Watches in service are stored in a controlled environment within the workshop. Pieces awaiting collection are held securely until the owner retrieves them.
A Workshop Focused on Mechanical Movements
Mechanical watchmaking is a field that rewards patience and discourages shortcuts. At stemwind, the workshop is set up to slow things down when they need to be slowed down. A movement that has been running for twenty years will have developed wear patterns that need to be understood before they can be addressed. We take the time to understand those patterns.
Watch owners in the Klang Valley often have limited options when it comes to mechanical servicing. Authorised service centres operate under manufacturer constraints and timelines that don't always suit the watch or the owner. Independent workshops vary widely in approach and capability. stemwind was established to offer a consistent, principled alternative — one where the watchmaker knows the movement and can speak to the owner about it directly.
Our work covers Swiss lever and cylinder escapements, Japanese T-shaped lever systems, pin-lever movements in vintage pieces, and a range of complications including calendar functions and chronograph mechanisms. For movements that fall outside our technical scope, we will say so clearly rather than take on work we cannot do well.
