Why stemwind

The Case for Choosing Your Watchmaker Carefully

Not all watch servicing is equal. The approach, the tools, and the honesty of the person doing the work determine the outcome far more than the cost on the invoice.

Core Advantages

What stemwind Brings to Your Watch

Six qualities that shape how we work, communicated plainly.

Transparent Communication

We explain what we find in plain language — no jargon, no assumptions about prior knowledge. You know exactly what is happening to your watch and why.

  • Pre-service written assessment provided
  • Updates during service if scope changes
  • Service record provided at collection

Genuine Technical Expertise

Our watchmaker has spent years working specifically on mechanical movements. This is not a side service added to a jewellery shop — it is the work we do.

  • Swiss, Japanese, and German calibre experience
  • Complication and vintage movement capability
  • Referral provided if outside our scope

Honest Scope of Work

We recommend only what is needed. If your watch needs a wellness check and nothing more, that's what we say — not an overhaul that would generate a larger invoice.

  • Conservative approach as default
  • No additional work without consent
  • Wear patterns explained candidly

Documented Service Records

Every service is recorded in writing. Replacement parts, lubricants, regulation results, and any significant findings are logged and provided to you on collection.

  • Paper record accompanies the watch
  • Provenance dossier for restoration work
  • Useful for future service reference

Respect for Originality

We understand that patina, original parts, and service history contribute to a watch's value and meaning. We preserve what should be preserved, replace only what is necessary.

  • Original parts retained wherever possible
  • Re-polishing only on request
  • All modifications disclosed

Accessible, Local Presence

We are a workshop you can visit, not a remote service centre. You can meet the watchmaker, discuss your piece in person, and collect it directly from the workshop.

  • Drop-in consultations welcome
  • Based in SS 15, Subang Jaya
  • Direct contact with watchmaker

Each Benefit, Explained

Professional Expertise

Built over years of hands-on work

Mechanical watchmaking draws on a body of knowledge that takes years to develop. Understanding how a lever escapement behaves as a mainspring depletes, recognising the difference between a worn cannon pinion and a worn setting lever, knowing when to replace a part and when adjustment is sufficient — these are skills formed through repetition and curiosity, not certification alone.

At stemwind, the watchmaker has worked on movements across calibre families: manual-wind, automatic, simple three-hand, and complications including calendar and chronograph. The approach is grounded in the specifics of each movement rather than applied broadly from a general checklist.

Technology & Tools

Precision equipment for exacting work

The workshop is equipped with tools appropriate to the work: ultrasonic cleaning equipment for movement parts, a timing machine for regulating finished movements across multiple positions, a dry pressure tester for verifying water resistance after reassembly, and optical magnification for close inspection of parts too small to assess with the naked eye.

These tools don't replace the watchmaker's judgement — they support it. A timing machine tells you the rate; the watchmaker determines what adjustment is needed and applies it. Good equipment and skilled interpretation work together.

Client Communication

Considerate throughout

We think good communication is part of the service. This means being available to answer questions before a watch is brought in, providing a clear assessment once it has been examined, and reaching out during the service if something unexpected is discovered that affects the agreed scope or cost.

For provenance restorations — which unfold over weeks — we keep the owner informed at meaningful stages rather than leaving them to wonder. The watch belongs to them; the process should feel collaborative.

Value & Pricing

Clear, fixed service prices

Our three service tiers are priced in advance and don't change without discussion. The Winding & Wellness Check at MYR 1,600, the Stem-to-Stern Service at MYR 4,400, and the Provenance Restoration from MYR 8,600 each represent a defined scope of work. There are no hidden fees for assessment, case handling, or service documentation.

Compared to sending a watch to a manufacturer's service centre — which often involves extended international transit and premium pricing regardless of the specific work needed — stemwind offers a considered alternative for mechanical watches whose owners want a personal relationship with the person doing the work.

Outcomes & Results

Measured by the watch's performance

A well-serviced mechanical watch should run more accurately, wind and set more crisply, and maintain its power reserve more consistently than before it arrived. These are measurable outcomes that you can assess in the weeks after collection.

We document regulation results before the watch leaves the workshop. If the watch performs materially differently from those results in regular use, we ask that owners bring it back so we can investigate. The service is complete when the watch is performing well in your hands — not just when it leaves the workbench.

What Sets Us Apart

Provenance-Focused Restoration

Our Provenance Restoration service is among the few available in Malaysia that treats documented ownership history as a core part of the brief. We develop a restoration plan collaboratively with the owner and produce a detailed dossier of everything done to the piece.

One Watchmaker, Full Accountability

The watchmaker who assesses your watch is the one who services it. There is no hand-off to a technician you haven't met. This means consistent judgment applied throughout and a single point of accountability for the outcome.

Service Pathways Without Pressure

Our three service tiers are designed to be genuinely different options — not upsells in disguise. The Wellness Check is a complete, valuable service on its own. We won't recommend the full overhaul unless the watch actually needs it.

A Relationship, Not a Transaction

We keep records of every watch we service. When you return in two or five years for a follow-up, we know the history of that piece. This continuity of care is something most service centres cannot offer.
